Chart Settings

The fields below allow you to adjust the default settings for charts.

Default Tool – The default tool to use on a chart

Revert To Default Tool – When completing an action with the selected tool, the chart will automatically switch back to the default tool (see above)

Bar Type – The default type of bar to display when opening a chart

Bar Scheme – Determines the color scheme for the bars. Normal displays bar color based on if the close is higher/lower than the open value. Available Bar Schemes include:

  • Normal – Displays a different color if the bar closes higher than open verses lower than open

  • Inside/Outside – Colors change if bar closes higher/lower than open, if the bar has a lower high/higher low than previous bar (inside) and if the bar has a higher high/lower low than the previous bar (outside)

  • Day Of Week – Bar color changes based on the day of the week

  • Alternate Day – Bar color alternates each day

  • Alternate Hour – Bar Color alternates each hour

Bar Size – Default bar size when opening a new chart

Bar Thickness – Default thickness for the bar outline (default 1 pixel)

Chart Symbol – Option to display the chart symbol/description in the top-left corner of the chart.

Line Chart Label – When using a line chart type, you can select the option to display the symbol, price, or none to the right side of the line. This can be useful when you have multiple instruments displayed on a single chart via an instrument overlay.

Time Method – The method to measure time for specific time-based components. Trading time will count each bar and assume 24 hour markets to come up with a total number. Elapsed time will count time as most people would e.g. skipping the overnight session and ending at the same time the next day would count as 1-day, whereas the Trading Time method may only count that as 12 hours.

Axis Style – Style of the price and time axis

Shade – Draws a shaded area at time or price intervals on the chart

Shift + Click – Object to draw when the user holds down on the Shift Key and clicks the left mouse button on the chart

Ctrl + Click – Object to draw when the user holds down on the Ctrl Key and clicks the left mouse button on the chart

Ctrl + Alt + Click – Object to draw when the user holds down on the Ctrl and Alt Keys and clicks the left mouse button on the chart

Line Method – Calculation method for calculating the lines on a wedge (Time/Price or Angle)

Fill Area – If true, the area of a wedge will be filled

Max Linear Bars – Maximum number of linear bars to load when opening a chart

Max Non Linear Bars – Maximum number of non-linear bars (ie Range, Renko etc) to load when opening a chart

Max Days (Tick Charts) – Maximum number of days to display tick-based charts

Minimum Bars – Minimum number of bars to load when opening a chart

Pop-up Delay (Seconds) – The time needed to hover over an object before the info box will pop-up.

Bar Width (Pixels) – Default spacing for the price bars

Price Bar Spacing – The space (in pixels) between each bar. Please note, this setting may only be visible when using larger bar widths.

Price Axis Spacing – Default spacing between the numbers that are displayed on the price axis

Top Inset (Pixels) – Default spacing to add to the top of the price plot when auto scale is enabled

Bottom Inset (Pixels) – Default spacing to add to the bottom of the price plot when auto scale is enabled

Display Bars – Percentage of bars to display when first opening a chart (ie fill 90% of the chart area)

Study Height (Pixels) – Default height for study plots

Study Layout – Layout preference for the study labels displayed in the legend area (horizontal or vertical)

Time Zone – Default time zone for the chart

Use Default – Use your local time zone from your system clock.

Calendar Days – If enabled, space will be preserved for non-trading days when displaying daily bars (normally this space is removed)

Indicators

The fields below allow you to adjust the default settings for indicators displayed on the price axis.

Last Price – The last traded price (updated live).

Avg Entry Price – When in a position, this indicator will show your average entry price.

Bid/Ask Midpoint – The midpoint value between the bid and ask price.

Best Bid – The current best bid.

Best Ask – The current best ask.

Daily High – The daily high.

Daily Low – The daily low.

Opening Price – The day's open price.

Closing Price – The previous close price.

Time Axis

Use the options below to configure how major time lines are displayed on charts.

Axis Spacing – Minimum spacing (in pixels) between times on the time axis of the chart.

Show Lines – Enable the Time Axis lines.

Line Spacing – Minimum spacing for major times displayed on the time axis

Start of Hour – Draw a vertical line at the start of each hour.

Midnight – Draw a vertical line at midnight.

Start of Day ETH – Draw a vertical line at the start of the ETH session.

Start of Day RTH – Draw a vertical line at the start of the RTH session.

End of Day ETH – Draw a vertical line at the end of the ETH session.

End of Day RTH – Draw a vertical line at the end of the RTH session.

Start of Week – Draw a vertical line at the start of each week.

Start of Month – Draw a vertical line at the start of each month.

Start of Year – Draw a vertical line at the start of each year.

Time of Day – Draw a vertical line at a custom time of day.

Labels

The list below shows the labels that are displayed on the price graph (such as Account, Day Range, Change %, etc). After moving the label over to the right column you are able to set it's location and font preferences.

Templates

The settings below enable you to change the behavior of chart templates. The default template (if enabled) will be added to all charts.

Default Template – Select one of your templates to load automatically each time you open a new chart.

Use Default – Enable the Default Template option.

Template Title – Select the label option for the top-right corner of the chart. Name Only will only show the name of the template. Study Labels Only will list each study within the template.

Overwrite Studies – Replace studies that are currently on the chart.

Confirm Overwrite Studies – Confirm that you would like to overwrite studies on the chart.

Link Templates – Will apply a template to all charts that are part of the link group (if configured, see the Chart Linking section).

Use Default In Scanner – Use the default template studies when viewing scan results.

Options

The fields below allow you to adjust the default settings for charts.

Use Untitled Analyses – By default, use an untitled analysis each time you open a chart.

Hide Primary Name – Hide the primary analysis name from the chart.

Show Extended Data – If true, after hours data is show by default when opening a chart

Snap Open/Close – If this is enable the mouse tools will automatically snap to open and closing points on the price bars

Show Trade Panel – Displays the Trade panel by default when opening a new chart

Show Orders – Active orders displayed directly on the chart.

Show Trades – Filled orders displayed directly on the chart.

Show DOM Panel – Displays the DOM (Depth of Market) panel by default when opening a new chart

Show Order Book – Display the Order Book panel by default.

Show Grid – Displays horizontal and vertical lines on the chart

Grid Dash – Show dashed grid lines instead of solid grid lines.

Show Chart Buttons – Enables the display buttons on the chart for adjusting the vertical space and bar width. This also applies to the remove study button on study plots

Show Quick Edit – Display the quick edit button next to each study label.

Show P/L Ladder – Displays the profit/loss ladder on the chart

Show Exchange – Toggles the display of the exchange as part of the title on the chart

Show Symbol – Displays the instrument symbol on the chart

Show Bar Size – Displays the current bar size on the chart

Show Analysis Name – Display the analysis name in the chart.

Show Crosshair – Toggles the default display of the crosshair feature for the mouse cursor

Global Crosshair – If enabled, the crosshair (where enabled) will be updated across multiple charts that display the same instrument

Double Crosshair – Displays two vertical lines encompassing the bar where the cursor is currently (instead of a single vertical line)

Solid Crosshair – Displays a solid line instead of a dashed line for the cross hair

Auto Scale – Default scale setting when opening a new chart

Auto Scale Price Only – If enabled, only the price action will be included in the auto scaling of the chart (components are excluded)

Semi Log Scale – Displays a chart using semi-log scale by default

Lock Scroll – Default lock scroll state (see Lock Scroll feature)

Lock Studies – Default Lock Studies state (see Lock Studies feature)

Lock Bar Size – Lock the bar size on the chart even when you switch instruments.

Show Info on Select – Turns on the Show Info feature when selecting a component

Show Info – Enables the show info feature when creating a new component

Show Range Outline – Turns on the range outline on the latest bar for Range/Renko bars

Show Middle Line – Turns on the display of the middle line for channel components

Erase Ruler – Erase the ruler each time it is used. If disabled, the ruler will stay on the chart as a component.

Confirm on Close – If enabled will display a warning message when closing a chart window

Link Minimize/Restore – If enabled, for linked chart windows all windows in the group will be minimized when one of them is minimized. Likewise when one of them is restored, all windows in the group will be restored

Show Bar Size Selector – Toggles the default display of the Bar Size Selector on charts

Show Bird's Eye View – Toggles the default display of the Bird’s Eye View when opening a chart

Show Bird's Eye View Lines – Display of the vertical lines on the Bird’s Eye plot

Resolve Trend Lines – If enabled, MotiveWave™ will attempt to load enough data to properly display all trend lines on a chart. By default it will estimate where the starting point of a trend line is based on the available data. This option will force the loading of data all the way back to the beginning of trend lines to improve the accuracy of the plot. Warning: this option can cause a lot of data to be loaded from your broker or data service. It is recommended that you leave this option of and turn it on where desired from the Chart Settings dialog

Show Properties on Double Click – Open the study/component properties when double-clicking on the chart object.

Group Studies – If enabled, study plots will be grouped together at the bottom of the chart in a stacked panel

Show Study Labels – Enables the display of study labels in the legend

Study Bar Updates – Toggles the live updating of studies from level 1 data verses calculating the most recent study values on the close of a bar

Study Dock Long Names – Separate graph studies will use their full names in the dock tab.

Use Account Position – Will enable this option by default for Strategies.

Show Values In Legend – If enabled, current study values will be displayed next to the study label in the study legend

Simple Study Title – Simplified display of the title in the legend area

Overlay Volume – Displays the volume information as an overlay on the chart instead of a separate plot

Draw Candle Outline – Draws the outline of the candle rectangle

Auto Load Studies – Automatically loads custom studies (SDK).

Use Last Image Name – If this option is enabled the last Save As Image file name will be used the next time you save the chart as an image (instead of generating the file name with the latest timestamp).

Auto Move Bar (Linear Only) – If enabled, this option will automatically create the next bar when the time has elapsed (instead of waiting for the next bar). This is especially useful for millisecond bars (see above) to show a continuously moving chart. See Configure > Preferences > Chart > Options.

Zoom Bar Size – Adjustments to the bar width smaller 1 pixel wide will automatically adjust the bar size (linear bars only). For example, if the bar size is 1 minute, reducing the bar width (from 1 pixel) will switch the bar size to 2 min, 4 min, 8 min etc. Expanding the bar width from that state will revert the bar size to 4 min, 2 min and then 1 minute.

Bar Sizes

This panel allows you to configure the available bar sizes for each chart. These will be shown the the bar size drop down in the top toolbar.

Bar Size Selector

This panel allows you to configure the available bar sizes in the Bar Size Selector. These will be shown as a list at the bottom of each chart.

Watermark

A watermark image may be configured to be displayed on all charts (and/or generated images) in various locations. Select the image by pressing the Browse button below.

Show Watermark – Enable the watermark on your charts.

File – Select an image file to use as a watermark.

Opacity – Set the opacity of the image.

Location – Select the location on the chart for the watermark.

Display – Select how the image watermark will display:

  • All - Watermark will display on your chart and in screenshots.

  • Image - Will display in screenshots but not on your charts.

Insets – Offset the watermark from the edge of the chart.

This feature will display a copyright label on all charts. The year, month and day can be dynamically inserted by using [YYYY], [MMM] or [MM] and [DD] markers.

Show Copyright – Enable the copyright on your charts.

Text – Copyright text to display on your charts.

Font – Select the font, color and size.

Location – Select the location on the chart for the copyright.

Insets – Offset the copyright text from the edge of the chart.

Components Panel

Stencils

Custom stencils can be created by pressing the + button below. You can change the order of the stencils by selecting them and pressing the up and down arrows. You can toggle the visibility by right-clicking on a stencil and choosing Hide/Make Visible.

Custom Components

Custom components can be created based on an existing component. Click the + button below to create a new custom component.
